Amidst the discussion before the India-Pakistan Super Four match in Colombo last Sunday, the veteran Pakistani pacifist revealed a rather startling fact: Virat Kohli had occupied his dreams. Considering Virat Kohli’s status as a globally polarizing figure in cricket and beyond, he undoubtedly enjoys more attention than his peers. Wasim Akram attributed this vivid dream to his extensive observation of Virat, especially in the context of the highly anticipated India-Pakistan match.
The revered Pakistani icon openly admitted that she had shared this revelation with Virat during their fleeting encounter just before the match.
“As I strolled past him today, I could not help but tell Virat Kohli that he had taken up residence in my dreams. To which he replied, ‘Wasim bhai, what do you mean?’ I explained to him that it’s because I have been seeing you on TV so much lately. Your presence just lingers in my thoughts,” Akram told.
Discussing Virat and the superstars of both teams, Wasim highlighted three match winners in the form of Kohli, Babar Azam and Shaheen Shah Afridi, adding that players like them are destined for significant moments like the India-Pakistan encounter.
Wasim also stressed that the stars of India and Pakistan have the desire to shine especially in this clash.
“Virat, Babar, Shaheen and all these match winners; this match is played for such moments – India vs Pakistan. I mean everyone in Pakistan is striving to perform well and vice versa. It’s all or nothing here, not just for individual players like Virat Kohli and Babar Azam, but also for the young talents. These games are really exhilarating. Yesterday, all of Colombo was in turmoil,” Akram explained.
India going strong in Colombo
In Colombo, the Indian team was decided to bat first and unlike the previous encounters, they started their innings impressively against the best bowling team of the tournament. Captain Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill successfully overcame the initial challenges posed to them by the formidable duo of Afridi and Naseem Shah. While Afridi struggled to contain the runs and failed to get much momentum out of it, Shah kept the precision and control on his side.
The Indian opening duo, who were beaten 66 for four in their last match after winning the toss, put up an impressive partnership of 121 runs. Both Gill and Rohit scored half hundreds but their wickets fell in quick succession.
Play was briefly suspended due to rain in Colombo and the scoreboard showed the score at 147 for two after 24.1 overs. Virat Kohli and the returning KL Rahul are currently in the starting line-up, Kohli with eight runs and Rahul with 17.
In the battle to reach the final, India must win at least two of the three matches in the Super Four phase. After the ODI against Pakistan, India must play Sri Lanka on September 12 and Bangladesh on September 15.
